Martin Speake is one of the UK’s leading jazz saxophonists. He cites Lee Konitz, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Ornette Coleman, Rabi Abou Khalil and Paul Motian as major influences. Martin has developed a personal musical voice that expresses a deep understanding of the history and language of jazz with individuality as an improviser that is intelligent, melodic, cool, complex, direct, beautiful and profound. Martin is as comfortable and fluent playing personal interpretations of the music of Charlie Parker, as he is performing with free improvising drummer Mark Sanders, in a duet with Ethan Iverson of the Bad Plus, or with Indian musicians Dharambir Singh and Sarvar Sabri. This evening, Martin meets brilliant young pianist, Tommy Scott, for the first time. Up close, personal, and intensely beautiful. Unmissable!

About Jazz at the Chapel

We are delighted to launch a brand-new jazz programme at Chapel Arts. Once each month, we will showcase the best of international jazz talent, featuring musicians from the UK, Europe, USA and beyond. In the unique acoustic space of Chapel Arts, we are thrilled to present a series of duo jazz performances. For our first programme, our performances will be convened and hosted by local jazz pianists, Alex Steele and Tommy Scott. They will appear at the piano to perform alongside a fantastic array of international jazz guests.
